Chapter_44
Zachary’s words hung in the air, and Yvette’s cool response only seemed to deepen the distance between them. The brief moment of recognition between them felt like a lifetime ago. Yvette’s posture was composed, her expression neutral, and though she acknowledged his presence, there was no warmth in her demeanor.
Lucas, noticing the tension between the two, cleared his throat awkwardly. “Mr. Chambers, it seems your… meeting has concluded. We should get going.”
Zachary glanced at Lucas before turning back to Yvette. He felt a heavy weight in his chest. “Yvette, I… I didn’t expect to see you here. I’ve been thinking a lot lately. About everything.”
Yvette tilted her head slightly, her gaze still cool. “Have you now?” she said, the faintest edge to her voice. “Well, it’s a bit late for apologies, don’t you think?”
Zachary flinched at her words, as if struck by the bluntness of her response. He had hoped for something different, maybe a sign that the ice between them could thaw. But instead, her indifference stung more than he expected.
“I didn’t want things to end like this,” he said softly, his voice carrying a hint of regret.
Yvette raised an eyebrow, her expression still unreadable. “Things ended the way they ended because you made your choice. And I’ve learned to accept that.”
There was no bitterness in her voice, only a quiet finality that made it clear she had moved on. Zachary’s eyes darkened with guilt, but he didn’t know how to reach her now, how to undo the hurt he had caused.
“I know I can’t undo the past,” Zachary said, taking a step closer. “But I—”
“Zachary,” Yvette interrupted, her voice calm but firm. “There’s nothing left to say. You made your decision, and so did I.”
For a moment, there was silence between them, the weight of unspoken words lingering in the air. Lucas, sensing the tension, cleared his throat again. “Mr. Chambers, we should really get going now.”
Zachary glanced at Lucas, then back at Yvette. His words faltered, but in the end, he said nothing more. He simply nodded, the regret in his eyes deepening.
“Goodbye, Yvette,” he said quietly, before turning to leave with Lucas.
Yvette watched them go, her face unreadable. Once they were out of sight, she sighed quietly to herself. She had expected this, the awkward encounter, the guilt he would feel, but it didn’t change anything. She wasn’t the same person who had once hoped for things to work out. The past was just that—past.
As she turned to head back into the restaurant, she found herself wondering, not for the first time, if there were some things in life that were simply meant to be left behind. And for her, Zachary Chambers was one of them.
But as she walked through the door, she spotted Jeremiah at the far end of the room, and her thoughts shifted. There were more pressing matters to attend to now—matters that would require all her attention, her focus, and her strength.
Jeremiah, as always, was a mystery. But one thing was certain: he wasn’t someone who let things go. And Yvette, for better or worse, found herself tied to him in ways she couldn’t fully understand.
