John’s question hung in the air. Adrian’s eyes met his for a moment, before John spoke again. “You’re disappointed it wasn’t her, huh?”
Adrian scoffed, his voice dripping with sarcasm. “Disappointed? About what? I don’t care at all.”
John raised an eyebrow, an amused glint in his eye. “Well, then I won’t mention it.”
The tension between them thickened, and Adrian glared at John, clearly annoyed. “If you know something, just spit it out. Why beat around the bush?”
John pretended to consider the request before teasing, “I thought you didn’t want to know. Do you really want to hear it?”
Adrian was silent, the frustration evident on his face. He quickly tossed the covers aside, stood up with a roughness that matched his mood, and slipped on his shoes with agitation. Once he had composed himself, he pushed the door open.
Jason entered, his cheerful demeanor a stark contrast to Adrian’s dark mood. He greeted Adrian and immediately began to share what had happened the previous night. “Vivian rushed over. She was really worried about you.” The mention of Vivian’s name softened Adrian’s expression, just a little.
“Vivian just called asking about you,” Jason continued, oblivious to the shifting emotions. “She wanted to know when you were up. She’s been worried.”
Adrian took his phone, scrolling through the call logs until his eyes landed on Eva’s name. His throat tightened as he asked hoarsely, “Did you call her, or did she call me?”
Jason glanced at the phone screen, then answered without much thought. “John called her to tell her you were drunk, but she didn’t show up. Vivian was the one who came rushing over.”
John, standing nearby, shrugged with a quiet smile.
Jason, unaware of the growing tension, continued, “No insinuations, but Eva didn’t even come. John called her, but she just… didn’t show up. Vivian, on the other hand, she rushed over right away.” Jason thought Adrian would appreciate the sentiment, but instead, Adrian pressed his lips together, his displeasure clear.
“What’s wrong?” Jason asked, sensing Adrian’s anger.
Adrian scoffed, his frustration bubbling up. “Nothing.”
Jason, still unsure, scratched his head. “I got breakfast. Want some?”
Adrian waved him off, his appetite lost to the simmering anger he felt toward Eva.
Jason mumbled something to John, and then closed the door behind him, puzzled by the strange atmosphere in the room. Adrian, seething with emotion, tugged at his tie in irritation.
John, ever the observer, waited in silence before speaking. “Though it’s just a guess, I want to clear her name.”
Adrian looked at him, his curiosity piqued. “Who?”
“Eva,” John replied calmly. “She didn’t show up last night, but something felt off when I called her later.” He recounted the events of the night before, outlining the details of what had transpired.
“Maybe she came but saw us and Vivian outside the bar, and decided not to show up,” John speculated.
Adrian’s eyes narrowed slightly, but he quickly dismissed the idea. “That’s impossible.”
John raised an eyebrow. “Why?”
“Why should she avoid Vivian?” Adrian scoffed. “She simply didn’t want to see me.”
John fell silent, as if contemplating Adrian’s words. The two of them sat in that silence for a while, the weight of unspoken truths hanging between them.
Suddenly, Adrian’s phone rang. Vivian’s name flashed on the screen. Before Adrian could answer, John sighed softly, “You still haven’t figured out what you want, huh?”
Adrian turned to find John already leaving the room. He stood still for a moment, staring at the phone in his hand, unsure of what to do.
Meanwhile, Eva’s life seemed to be taking a different direction. She had made up her mind, and the shift was palpable. Emily, ever supportive, was elated by the news. “That’s great,” she said, grasping Eva’s hand with genuine happiness. “Have you thought of a name for the child?”
Eva smiled, though there was still a touch of uncertainty. “It’s too early for names.”
Emily, however, was persistent. “Not at all! If you think of a name now, you can use it when the baby’s born. And you’ll need to buy a house, right?”
Eva nodded, her mind already at work. “I plan to buy a house after the divorce. I need to talk to my family first, though. They’re all abroad. If they’re supportive, I’ll live with them. If not, I’ll move to a city without Adrian and raise the child on my own.”
She hadn’t envisioned motherhood in this way, feeling she hadn’t truly grown up herself. But now, the idea was starting to take shape in her mind. Whether the child would be a boy or a girl, she knew she had to be prepared, and she began researching everything she could.
“Don’t worry,” Emily reassured her. “Mr. Hansen adores you. He’ll surely agree. Raising a child can be quite joyful, don’t you think?”
Eva chuckled softly, her heart slightly lighter as she continued planning her future. Her path was finally beginning to take shape.
