Eva stood frozen as Vivian’s scream echoed in the air, the scene unfolding before her in a blur. The sound of Vivian tumbling down the stairs cut through the tension of the moment like a sharp knife, and for a heartbeat, the world seemed to slow down. People around her gasped, their eyes wide in shock, as Vivian’s body hit the ground with a sickening thud.
For a moment, everything was still.
Eva’s heart raced, her breath caught in her throat. What had just happened? Had she caused this? No, she couldn’t have—she was simply defending herself. But then why did the sight of Vivian sprawled on the floor, her face pale with fear, make Eva feel a pang of guilt?
She glanced down at Vivian, who was now sitting on the ground, clutching her ankle with one hand and glaring at Eva with fury in her eyes. Eva’s gaze shifted to the group of friends who had surrounded Vivian, panic written across their faces. They were trying to help her up, but the air was thick with tension.
Julia, still nursing the pain in her foot, looked at Eva as though she were a monster. “You… you did this!” she spat, her voice dripping with venom.
Eva didn’t respond. She couldn’t. What was there to say? She hadn’t intended for any of this to happen, but now… things were spiraling out of control. Her heart sank as the realization hit: the people around her would never see things clearly. To them, she would always be the one in the wrong, the one who had started the fight.
Vivian, through gritted teeth, managed to stand with the help of her friends, her face pale but her eyes flashing with venom. “You’re going to regret this, Eva,” she snarled, her voice barely above a whisper. “You’ve made an enemy of me now.”
Eva’s jaw tightened. She had had enough of Vivian’s manipulations, her crocodile tears, and her constant need to play the victim. But as much as she wanted to retort, to tell Vivian exactly what she thought, she kept silent. The last thing she needed was to escalate the situation further.
The crowd was growing, murmurs of disbelief rippling through the group. Eva turned away, her mind racing. She needed to leave. Now. Before things got even worse.
As she moved toward the exit, the sounds of whispers followed her like a swarm of bees. She didn’t care. The pain in her scalp from Julia’s earlier attack was still sharp, but it didn’t matter. Her thoughts were already elsewhere, swirling around the chaos she had just found herself entangled in.
“Eva, wait.”
The voice that called her name made her stop in her tracks. She didn’t need to turn around to know who it was. Adrian.
She sighed, a mix of frustration and exhaustion flooding her. She should have known he would come. After all, they were married—albeit in name only. But the last thing she wanted right now was to deal with him. Not after everything that had just happened.
Turning slowly, she faced him. Adrian stood at the entrance of the restroom, his eyes dark and unreadable. He was watching her intently, his expression guarded. For a moment, neither of them spoke. It was as if the entire world had come to a halt.
“Are you okay?” Adrian asked, his voice low, his eyes flickering over her with a mixture of concern and curiosity. But beneath that, Eva could see something else—a certain coldness, a distance that hadn’t been there before.
Eva didn’t trust herself to speak, so she simply nodded. She wasn’t sure what kind of response he was expecting, but it wasn’t one she could give. There was too much unsaid between them—too much history, too much unspoken tension.
He stepped closer, his gaze never leaving hers. “What happened in there, Eva?” he asked, his voice firm, but there was a softness to it too, as if he was trying to reach out to her.
Eva swallowed, her throat dry. “What happened?” she repeated, her voice barely above a whisper. “What do you think happened, Adrian?”
He looked at her, his face still unreadable, but she could see the flash of something behind his eyes—a hint of guilt? Was it pity?
“Vivian… she—” Adrian started, but Eva cut him off.
“Don’t,” she said sharply, her voice steady despite the turbulence within her. “I don’t need you to defend her. I’m not the one who started this, and I’m not the one who’s going to apologize.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened, but he didn’t speak. For a moment, they just stood there, the air between them thick with unspoken words and unresolved emotions. Eva could feel the weight of his gaze on her, but she refused to let it break her.
She turned to leave, not waiting for Adrian to stop her. This moment, this confusion, it wasn’t hers to fix. It never had been.
But just as she reached the door, she heard Adrian’s voice again.
“Eva…”
This time, it wasn’t the cold, distant tone she had expected. It was different. Hesitant. Almost… regretful?
She didn’t stop this time.
She walked out, leaving Adrian standing alone in the hallway, his hand reaching out, but never quite touching her.
