Chapter_238
Andrew turned his head to look at Victor standing not far away, his expression turning cold.
So, the Carter family still hasn’t learned their lesson, Andrew thought bitterly. And now, they’re daring to mess with Bonnie again.
With that, Andrew took a step forward and casually asked, “Is it you?”
Victor was momentarily taken aback, but then recognition flashed across his face. His voice was tight and strained as he stammered, “Mitchell… Is your last name Mitchell? Are you from the Mitchell family of Betrico?”
Andrew lifted his chin in a gesture of quiet defiance, his words dripping with disdain. “That’s right. I didn’t realize the Carter family would fall apart so easily. I barely lifted a finger, and you all fled Betrico like a pack of cowards. If I had known, I would’ve been gentler. I guess I overestimated the Carter family after all.”
Victor’s grip on his hands tightened as he listened to Andrew’s harsh words. His jaw clenched, and his eyes narrowed, but he said nothing for a long moment. The anger burning inside him was almost palpable, but he fought to keep it in check.
Finally, after a long, tense silence, Victor lifted his head and put on a forced, polite smile. His tone became excessively sweet, almost patronizing. “Hello, Mr. Mitchell. I’m here to apologize to Bonnie. I didn’t mean to cause her any trouble. You can ask anyone around here—my apology is sincere. I just hope she can forgive the Carter family. What happened yesterday was Winona’s fault. If Bonnie is still upset, I can have Winona apologize to her personally.”
Andrew’s gaze lingered on Victor, studying him with quiet amusement. He raised an eyebrow and gave a small, mocking smile. This guy sure switched up fast. Did he get a shock or something?
With a soft, almost playful voice, Andrew turned to Bonnie. “Do you want Winona to come over and apologize in person?”
Bonnie shook her head vehemently, practically jumping at the opportunity to dismiss the idea. “No, I don’t have the time to get tangled up with Winona. They can just stay far away from me,” she said quickly.
Andrew couldn’t help but chuckle. He reached out and flicked her forehead, then ruffled her hair affectionately, a hint of amusement in his eyes.
Feels pretty good, Andrew thought, his voice soft as he whispered, “It’s up to you.”
Bonnie stood there, stunned, staring at Andrew. Her heart fluttered unexpectedly, and she couldn’t help but think, Andrew actually looks quite handsome!
But then, just as quickly, Bonnie shook off the thought. Oh no… It must be my imagination. I must have a fever or something to think Andrew looks attractive.
Victor, who had been watching the exchange, gritted his teeth in frustration. Andrew turned his attention back to him, sneering. “Did you hear that? Keep your fiancée away from Bonnie from now on. What happened in Betrico? Consider that a warning.”
Without waiting for a reply, Andrew grabbed Bonnie’s hand and pulled her away, leaving Victor standing alone.
The surrounding students whispered among themselves, gossiping curiously about Victor’s failed apology and the drama that had unfolded. Victor, seething with anger, turned on his heel and stormed off, his pride shattered.
At the Carter family estate, Winona sat on the sofa, sipping a glass of milk Yulia had prepared for her. She knew that, for now, the only person she could manipulate within the family was Yulia. With the baby in her belly, she had gained some leverage—Yulia had to obey her every command.
The satisfaction of having control, even in a small way, reignited Winona’s confidence. She directed Yulia to run errands, even asking her to bring more water, her eyes glinting with twisted satisfaction as she watched Yulia silently obey.
Victor, meanwhile, was speeding back home in his car, his mind racing with fury. As soon as he arrived, he stormed into the living room where Winona was lounging with Yulia. Without a word, he grabbed Winona by the arm and yanked her off the couch.
Before she could react, he slapped her hard across the face. Winona stumbled back, falling onto the carpet. Instinctively, she protected her belly, her mind racing with thoughts of the unborn child.
Yulia rushed over, kneeling beside Winona. “Is the baby okay? My grandchild, please, get Mark and a doctor—quickly!” she cried out in panic.
Winona, who was just under three months pregnant, knew that the fall could jeopardize her pregnancy. She clutched her belly, praying that nothing had happened to it.
“I’m fine,” Winona muttered through gritted teeth, trying to hold back tears. She looked up at Victor, her face pale with fear. “Why did you hit me, Victor? What did I do wrong? How can you treat me like this when I’m carrying your child?”
Yulia, now frantic with worry, scolded Victor. “Victor, what is wrong with you? Can’t you talk things out calmly? Winona is pregnant!”
Victor’s blue eyes were cold and unreadable, though there was a slight red tinge at the corners. A mocking smile curled at his lips, but his gaze was full of hostility as he turned to Winona.
Winona felt a wave of unease wash over her as Victor’s demeanor grew colder. What’s happening? she thought, confusion creeping in. Her confidence, which had been so firm just moments ago, began to crack.
After a long, piercing silence, Victor’s voice cut through the tension, each word icy and venomous. “You’ve ruined everything, Winona. Don’t you realize the mess you’ve caused? With just one slap, you destroyed the plans my grandfather and sister spent years carefully crafting. The Carter family could’ve risen to even greater heights, but now? All because of you, it’s all gone.”
Winona winced, knowing she was responsible for everything that had gone wrong. She bit her lip, guilt and fear flooding her. She didn’t dare argue but instead looked at Victor with pleading eyes, silently begging for his mercy.
Victor’s gaze softened ever so slightly, but his words were no less cruel. “I’ll tell you this, Winona. My mother is the hostess of the Carter family. You’re just a woman carrying a child. If I accept the baby, then it’ll be a Carter. If I don’t, then it’s just an illegitimate child. Don’t ever think you can boss my mother around again. You’re not some heir to this family. You’re nothing but a burden.”
The words hit Winona like a slap in the face. She couldn’t comprehend how Victor could say such things. Why is he being so cruel to me? she wondered.
Victor, his expression hard, turned to leave. “If you can’t accept that, take your child and leave,” he added coldly.
Yulia, worried about Winona and her baby, nodded reluctantly and followed Victor upstairs.
Winona sat alone on the couch, her heart racing. Her gaze turned to Victor’s room upstairs, and something inside her hardened. If he was going to treat her like this, she wouldn’t stay silent anymore.
With trembling hands, Winona pulled out her phone and dialed Robert. As soon as the call connected, her voice broke, tinged with a faint sob. “I’m so scared, Victor wants to kill me. Hurry, come save me.”
