Chapter 52
“Zachary isn’t someone she can handle. Try and get her to move on. You don’t see other young women hanging around Zachary other than his family. He’s a heartless man. Why can’t Elisa listen to reason?” Clive sighed, clearly frustrated with his sister’s behavior. He had tried so hard to reason with her, but it seemed Elisa’s feelings for Zachary were unshakeable. Clive, tired of the situation, finally gave up. “I’m too busy to deal with her now. Honey, I’ll leave Elisa in your hands.”
Alice, Clive’s wife, took the responsibility with ease. “Carry on with your work. I’ll pick Elisa up now and take her to go shopping with Mom. Mom’s been feeling down lately,” she added, her voice full of understanding. Alice knew her mother-in-law, Audrey, was struggling emotionally, and she hoped a little retail therapy would lift her spirits. Audrey had been in a melancholic state for some time, and Alice could tell it had to do with the unresolved mystery of her sister’s disappearance.
Clive remained quiet on the other end of the line, his mind dwelling on the reasons behind his mother’s sadness. Audrey had spent decades searching for her younger sister, whom she had been separated from at a young age. Audrey and her sister had grown up in an orphanage after losing both of their parents. When a wealthy couple came to adopt, they chose to take in Audrey’s younger sister, leaving Audrey behind. Despite the pain of parting, Audrey understood her sister would be better off with the couple, who seemed to be in a position to give her a better life.
Before they parted, the sisters had taken a picture together to remember one another, but after that fateful day, they never saw each other again. Audrey, though, never forgot her sister. As she grew older, Audrey left the orphanage and worked her way up in the corporate world. Eventually, she married into a wealthy family and became Mrs. Stone. Throughout her success, Audrey never stopped searching for her sister, but despite her efforts, there had been no news.
Recently, however, Clive had come across a lead. Audrey’s joy was palpable when she learned that the wealthy couple who had adopted her sister was still alive. Audrey, Clive, and his father visited them, hoping to learn more about her sister. The couple had initially been kind to Audrey’s sister, but after adopting her, they quickly grew disinterested, especially when they had their own child a year later. They decided to send Audrey’s sister away, giving her to a maid, and ever since, there had been no trace of her. The maid’s family didn’t know what had happened, and the trail had gone cold. This uncertainty had left Audrey in a perpetual state of worry, and Clive knew how much it weighed on her.
The only clue left was a photograph that Audrey had kept all these years. Clive had uploaded a digital version online, hoping that it might lead them to his aunt or her descendants. “Honey, tell Mom that we’ll find her sister so long as she’s still alive. Even if her sister isn’t around anymore, we will locate her children. Mom needs to relax. We still need her to identify her sister when she’s found.” Clive’s love for his mother was evident in his voice. He wanted nothing more than to ease her pain and give her the closure she so desperately needed.
Alice’s voice softened with sympathy. “I will. Get back to your work. I’ll pick Elisa up. Clive, if Elisa won’t listen, why don’t we just let her try? Zachary might be indifferent, but he’s a decent man. Elisa could give herself to him.” Alice truly believed in Elisa’s worth, and despite the odds, she thought Elisa was a good match for Zachary. She knew that both families were of the same social standing, though their business rivalry created tension between them. Still, whenever they crossed paths, they observed the necessary formalities. If Elisa succeeded in winning Zachary’s heart and marrying into the York family, it could potentially ease the ongoing discord between the two families.
Deep down, Alice supported Elisa’s pursuit. She saw Elisa’s bold move as an act of courage, and she believed that Zachary, despite his cold exterior, was someone Elisa could connect with.
