Chapter 8
Zachary was meticulous about maintaining his figure, determined not to let himself become overweight. He knew how hard it was to lose weight, and he wasn’t about to let himself go.
Serenity, noticing his dedication to staying fit, smiled. “You’re fit, Mr. York.”
Zachary, not one to engage in casual chit-chat for too long, simply nodded and replied, “Sure.”
“Goodnight,” Serenity said, preparing to leave.
As she turned, Zachary’s voice stopped her. “Hang on, Se… Serenity.”
Pausing in her tracks, Serenity turned back to look at him, confusion in her eyes. “Yes?”
Zachary, his expression serious, glanced at her and said, “Please don’t walk around in your pajamas next time.”
Serenity’s face flushed as she realized what he was referring to. She wasn’t wearing a bra underneath her loose pajamas, and unfortunately, Zachary’s sharp eyes had caught that detail.
He quickly added, “It’s not about us being married… But, what if someone else sees you like this? I don’t want other men to notice.”
Flustered, Serenity darted back to her room, slamming the door behind her.
Zachary stood still, his face expressionless as he stared after her retreating figure. He hadn’t even had a chance to feel awkward for her before she embarrassed herself.
After a moment, he sighed and sat down, rubbing his temples. He eventually headed to the master bedroom. The house had been hastily purchased and furnished, so things weren’t exactly organized yet.
What impressed him, however, was Serenity’s ability to take subtle hints, choosing not to impose by demanding they sleep in the same room. It was a small but significant observation on his part. At least marital obligations weren’t on the agenda just yet.
The hours passed uneventfully, and the couple spent the night in their separate rooms.
The next morning, Serenity woke up at six, as she always did. Back at her sister’s house, she would usually get up, prepare breakfast, and tidy up before heading out to help Liberty with the laundry if time permitted. For years, Serenity had taken on the role of a nanny in Liberty’s home, mostly to ease her sister’s burden. But her brother-in-law had taken advantage of that, ordering her around like a servant.
Today, as Serenity woke in the unfamiliar bedroom, the memories of the night before began to flood her mind. She smiled softly to herself, murmuring, “I must have still been half-asleep to think I’m at my sister’s house. This is my home now. I don’t have to get up just yet.”
However, her body clock wouldn’t allow her to sleep in, no matter how much she tried. Her stomach rumbled, reminding her it was time to get up.
After changing into some clothes and freshening up, Serenity walked out of her room, glancing at Zachary’s door. Seeing that it was still closed, she assumed he was still asleep after coming home late the night before.
Heading into the kitchen, Serenity surveyed the empty space. She had placed an order for kitchenware the day before, but it hadn’t arrived yet. If she had known, she would have just gone to a store instead of relying on an online order.
As she turned to leave the kitchen, she remembered a breakfast place she had spotted in the neighborhood while moving in. Deciding to get breakfast takeout, she wondered what Zachary might like. Since she couldn’t exactly wake him up to ask, she bought a little of everything. Omelets, bacon, sausages, pancakes, and toast—just the kind of breakfast that was popular in Wiltspoon.
Meanwhile, Zachary was already awake. Despite having stayed up late the previous night, he was an early riser. By the time Serenity had left to get breakfast, he had already woken up and walked out of his room, his chest bare as he went to get a glass of water.
It was in that moment that Serenity returned, the door swinging open as she stepped inside. The two of them locked eyes, and in a split second, Zachary instinctively crossed his arms over his chest and rushed back to his room, clearly embarrassed.
Serenity, frozen for a moment, couldn’t help but burst into laughter.
She muttered to herself, “There’s nothing special about a man’s upper body… It’s just abs. I can’t believe he tried to cover himself up like that. Haha. That was so funny!”
A few moments later, Zachary reappeared, fully dressed and looking far less flustered than before.
